Antique Flemish painting from 17th century. Oil painting on canvas depicting the biblical subject Susanna and the Elders attributable to the circle of Pieter Frans de Grebber (1600 - 1652). The story of Susanna is a religious story that is part of the book of Daniel. Susanna, a very beautiful and pious young woman, is lulled by two old men who frequent her husband's house and manage to break into her garden and surprise her while she is taking a bath. They had been elected judges by the Jewish community exiled to Babylon and, inflamed with lust, they threaten to accuse her of having surprised her with a young lover if she does not give herself to them. Susanna's refusal to publicly accuse her of adultery. Carried ahead of the court is found guilty and sentenced to death by stoning, but at this point Daniel comes forward, who then personally interrogates the two slanderers and makes the deception emerge. Susanna's reputation is restored to honor and Daniel's fame grows among the people. Large size and impact framework with a carved and gilded wooden frame.
